I was interviewed the other day by a local radio station, and the question rose about what I thought of the Harry Potter series. Now I have openly said, the writing of J.K. Rowling is one of my major influences, and I love the stories (my favorite aspect, is the fact that the books are who done-it mysteries that keep you guessing till the end, when Rowling masterfully pulls everything together), but there is no end of criticism (see here and here for example of some extreme interpretations.) for her writing.
My response during the interview was that anything can be interpreted any way if you think hard enough (is Picasso a master or just a bad drawer for example?). There is certainly a lot of symbolism in my novel, The Seed of Hope, which is why the question was raised in the first place, but that is not the intent of the story.
This is where I do have some criticism of the Harry Potter series. The intent is clear — tell a great story, but in my opinion, the purpose of a story is to impart a message. Throughout history stories have been used a teaching method, to instill values, pass on traditions etc. There is certainly a message about racial tolerance with references to mud-bloods, but is that enough?
Who am I to answer that; beside everyone is going to have their own opinions, but one thing that I have tried to weave through The Seed of Hope are two very important messages:
1. Embracing your inner talents, and abilities
2. The environmental crisis we are facing.
Read the book, and tell me what you think?
